Thinking about maters

With the weather being nice today — 81 degrees, low humidity, light breeze with sunshine for the first day in five — Andy and I decided to step away from our home offices for lunch. So we headed out to one of our favorite outdoor cafes in Raleigh, Zest.

I ordered a zestwich with heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, avocado and sprouts. On the way home from lunch, I realized that, simply put, I had just had a mater sandwich for lunch.

I don’t know if mater is an Appalachian or Southern slang word or both, but I love it. Mater, mater, mater. It just rolls off the tongue so much easier than tomato. It’s playful, homey, summery and happy.

It’s so against my nature to write a blog post without some sort of photo. So, I thought I’d share a photo of a very memorable tomato dish I had in Lanai – Waimea Heirloom Tomato Salad with Kaiwe Smoked Alaea Pink & Molokai Volcanic Salt with a Brie Cheese Croquette. In other words, it was a mater salad.
