My sister and I made a 2021 fitness resolution that we were able to keep and plan to continue into 2022. It’s effective, concise and achievable. Most of all, it’s not overwhelming. What is it? We call it “threes.” What that means is that three days a week we do three different strength training exercises.

We choose strength training exercises that work the larger muscle groups and preferably multiple muscle groups in each exercise. Here are some examples:

  • Squats with shoulder presses
  • Supermans
  • Kettlebell swings
  • Birddogs with a crunch
  • Wall sits with bicep curls
  • Lunges with bicep curls and tricep kick backs
  • Pushups
  • Planks

For each exercise, I do two sets of 15 repetitions.

I tried to incorporate some sort of core or balance exercise with each day of threes.

For accountability, my sister and I would tell each other when we did our threes.

It generally only takes about 10 minutes or less to do threes. I play music I like that makes it enjoyable.

In 2021, I did threes 49 of 52 weeks. Life happens. I was sick for two weeks and another week was so busy.

After a year of threes, I think the biggest difference is that my balance is much better. My arms feel more toned. I’m also able to use heavier hand weights that what I started.
